Master Thesis: "The determination of football players´ salaries" (2011-2012)
The purpose of this study was to analyse the evolving structure of the labour market in professional football, with a specific focus on the English Premier League.
I analysed the labour market structure of the English professional football to understand how its evolution enabled the extraordinary increase of professional football players salaries in the last decades.
I examined the evolution of the economic structure since its very beginning in 1888 (the Football League), to understand how the basic principles behind the creation of the EPL (1991) impacted the distribution of audio-visual rights and the development of revenues.
I discussed the role of taxes in professional football players´ wages and how tax reforms potentially impact the international migration dynamics within the European football market.
I analysed the relation between contract length and salary levels with their potential impact to the individual and collective sporting performance.
I explored the executive decisions from the clubs´ management to understand how their strategy, whether for profit maximization or for maximization of sporting results, could impact the wages of professional football players.
I empirically analysed the individual performance of the English Premier League players (data from season 2010/11) through the estimation of an econometric model aimed to determine which variables might be correlated to their wages.
To conclude, I summarized the main ideas of this study and presented my findings and interpretation of the results from an economic stand-point.
